Therapy for Children

In-Person in San Jose & Virtual Therapy Across California

When your child is struggling, it can be hard to know what they need, or how to help.

Sometimes it shows up clearly. Big emotions. Outbursts. Avoidance. Other times, it’s more subtle. They may complain of  stomach aches before school, have difficulty sleeping, or seem easily discouraged.

I offer therapy for children that prioritizes your child feeling safe, comfortable, and engaged so they can get the most from therapy. When working with a therapist, your child can begin to understand their emotions, build confidence, and develop skills that support them both now and as they grow.

Helping Children Understand Their Emotions

Children don’t always have the language to explain what they’re feeling. Instead, emotions often show up through behavior:

  • Tantrums or emotional outbursts

  • Avoidance of certain places or situations

  • Difficulty separating from parents

  • Challenges at school or with peers

  • Physical complaints like headaches or stomach aches

These are not signs that something is “wrong” with your child. They are signals and your child’s way of communicating that something feels overwhelming or confusing.

When working with a therapist, kids can learn how to express what they’re feeling more effectively.

A Safe Space for Growth

Therapy for children is different from therapy for adults. Children learn through connection, play, and creativity. That’s why my approach is designed to meet them where they are. In our sessions, we use tools that feel natural and engaging.

In sessions, your child may:

  • Use play to explore feelings and experiences

  • Engage in art or creative expression

  • Learn and practice skills through engaging activities

  • Try out ways to regulate and self soothe

  • Role play communication and decision-making skills

What I Help Children With

I work with children ages 5–12, navigating a range of emotional and behavioral challenges.

This includes, but isn’t limited to:

  • Emotional regulation difficulties

  • Generalized anxiety

  • Separation anxiety

  • Social anxiety

  • Low self-esteem or confidence

  • ADHD-related challenges

  • School-related stress

Supporting Children Through Anxiety

Anxiety in children can feel overwhelming, not just for them, but for you as a parent.

Your child may:

  • Worry excessively about school, friendships, or performance

  • Avoid activities or ask to stay home

  • Have a hard time being away from parents

  • Seek constant reassurance or be passive with peers

  • Become easily overwhelmed or emotional

I help children understand what anxiety feels like in their body and mind. Through therapy, they begin to develop skills to manage those feelings, rather than feeling controlled by them.

Over time, children often gain:

  • Greater emotional awareness

  • Improved coping strategies for anxiety

  • Increased confidence in facing challenges and anxiety provoking situations

My Approach to Sessions

I use an integrative approach that combines evidence-based techniques with a warm, relational style.

This may include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for skill building and positive self talk

  • Play-based therapy and art for emotional expression and processing

  • Developmentally appropriate strategies for anxiety and behavior

Each session is tailored to your child’s unique personality, needs, and pace.

The Role of Parents in Therapy

You are an essential part of your child’s growth.

While therapy provides your child with a safe space to explore and learn, lasting change often happens through what takes place outside of sessions: at home, in daily interactions, and within your relationship.

I collaborate closely with parents to:

  • Understand and meet your child’s emotional needs

  • Learn strategies for responding to big emotions

  • Support co-regulation and connection

  • Practices you can use to reinforce learning in therapy

This partnership helps reinforce what your child is learning in therapy and supports meaningful, long-term progress.

What to Expect When Starting

Beginning therapy for your child is a collaborative process.

  • We begin with a parent-child session to:

    • Understand your concerns and goals

    • Begin to get to know your child and learn about their experiences

    • Create a plan tailored to your child’s needs

  • Depending on your child’s needs, therapy may include:

    • Individual sessions for your child

    • Parent sessions for guidance and support

    • A combination of both

Helping Your Child Feel More Like Themselves

Every child deserves to feel understood, confident, and capable of handling life’s challenges.

Through therapy, your child can:

  • Learn to understand and express their emotions

  • Build confidence in themselves

  • Develop tools for managing their emotions

  • Strengthen their sense of self

You don’t have to navigate this alone, and neither does your child.
